Altitude features in Devon Life

Posted: Sep 22, 2011

Altitude is honoured to have been featured in this months Devon Life magazine.

Altitude features across a full page spread, with the title of the article being “Miles Noble MD of Altitude, one of Plymouths most enterprising design companies.”

The article tells readers of Miles’ journey, how he built the company and the coveted secrets of running a sucessful business. It also details the future for Altitude, and the possibility of a creative consortium.

“Altitude” is aptly named. The company’s success is meteoric and as Altitude celebrates its fourth birthday this year it seems intent on flying in the face of the current climate. Tucked under their belt is an impressive list of companies with blush-inducing testimonials about the creative skills attributed to the Altitude team.

Names include Coke ICE, part of the corporate giant Coca-Cola, who gave Altitude the brief of a complete brand identity, which they delivered to great acclaim. Other major successes are both far and near and include several hotel groups – the latest being a number of the franchised Holiday Inn hotels, many of whom claim their 500% turnover is due to the fresh new image created for them by “Altitude”.

It all started with a bit of fan mail. Several years ago, fresh out of Plymouth College of Art, Miles heard music artist Mylo interviewed by Gill Mills from Radio 1. He emailed the DJ and asked if there were any other podcast interviews. She wrote back, and noticing Miles web design details asked if he would build her a website.

“I was a bit taken aback and as I had little experience at the time and said that I would do it for free if she would pass my name to her contacts” said Miles. “She loved the website and recommended me to Mylo. I did his, and then did one for another artist, Robyn who had a number 1 within months of the site being live. I then went on to do Coke ICE. Things really took off from there, and I’m involved with a number of musicians, including an upcoming singer called Misty Miller who is becoming very big.

Despite the big names, Miles Noble is determined to stay loyal to his home town. “I grew up here. I was blessed to go to Plymouth College which had a fantastic atmosphere to learn in. My parents sacrificed a lot for my education. I learned how to work hard there and it has stayed with me in the real world”.

“I realised early on that I’m much more creative in an environment that is not manic. London isn’t for me. I try and collaborate with other people who are from Devon – I’m a great believer in trying to keep things local. My ambition would be to make the County the hub of creative enterprise.” To that end Miles is keen to invest in future generations. “I like to give time to students from local colleges and universities and offer work placements as much as I can” he says. “It’s important to share experiences and to encourage youngsters”.

There is no doubt that the students will benefit. It’s easy to see why Miles Noble is successful. He has an easy charm, winning smile and a fizzing creative energy that could run the national grid.

So it’s not surprising to hear that Noble has some different views about running a business. He’s much keener on the “hub and spoke” method of management. “I don’t see myself expanding into a formal business with hierarchy and management commitments” he says. “I’d much prefer to generate the work myself – be the person to front the business and work in tandem with people whose skills complement the project in hand”.

“The success of ‘Altitude’ is, I’m sure because it is run in this way. There are a large number of people that I collaborate with – ‘Actuate Marketing’ is one. It is one of the leading marketing consultancies in the region and we work well on all sorts of projects. Being able to cherry pick the best means that there is no risk of people getting stale – you can choose the brightest people to suit the project and it keeps work fresh and individual.”

Currently Altitude works out of the University of Plymouth’s Formation Zone. “Next year we will be moving into another building to build a creative consortium where we all share skills” says Noble.

So what’s the secret of a good business? Noble says “Keep your website up to date, refresh it regularly. Our maxim is that you should rise to the challenge of your vision, find the solution that makes it a reality and turn that into tangible results that impact positively on your business. That’s how “Altitude” is raising the bar in the creative process – and by doing so we are taking design to new heights.”

In March, Altitude won a competitive tender to redesign and develop Montecute House’ suite of Holiday Inn websites. The website was launched in May, and ever since, online revenue and bookings have increased by 1600%.

The Monteacute suite consists of four different suites in four different locations, and through a combination of search engine optimisation (SEO), web copywriting, and professional design, Monteacute House has benefited greatly, with profit margins to prove it.

An intensive program of digital marketing led to a 93% increase in monthly unique visitors, and an 85% increase in the number of pages viewed in the first three months. 87% of the visitors to the website came through search engines, illustrating the impact that good SEO can have on website performance in such a competitive market.

Needless to say, Montecute House’ Marketing Director David Parrett was very pleased with the results, giving Altitude a glowing testimonial, which looking at the percentages, was well deserved.

As one of Plymouth’s most renowned and popular eating and drinking venues, The Waterfront Restaurant needs to maintain its high profile in the sector so the right kind of web presence is vital. That was the challenge the venue set Altitude’s team when it commissioned a brand new website and brand identity.

The restaurant needed a visual identity that fitted in with its stunning waterside location in Plymouth Sound and reflected the quality of its menu and hospitality. A simple and understated, yet stylish marine themed image was used for the logo and the design and functionality of the website complemented the look perfectly. Easy to navigate, features include online menu listings and a diary of events.

Since the site was launched the new look has helped generate increased traffic and interest in the restaurant and its menu selection. One of the key results of the re-design is that staff can now easily update information online.

Swedish pop star Robyn wanted a website for her UK launch and asked Altitude to come up with a design that reflected her music style, which blends the gritty sound of American urban R&B with the sunny pop of her homeland. But the challenge didn’t end there – alongside a great look, there had to be bags of functionality too.

Altitude produced a stunning design that not only reflected Robyn’s style, but had UK market appeal too. At the heart of the website was the agency’s state-of-the-art Content Management System which combined hi-tech function with flexibility, delivering all the artist’s needs. The high specification site included a VIP area and fans’ forum and Altitude also made stickers for placement on the CD covers, CD inlays promoting the ringtones and downloads.

Such was the success of Altitude’s first site for Robyn in 2007, she came back for a second one, which was launched in 2010. Both sites helped the artist establish herself in the UK market and gave fans the best possible interactive experience with music downloads, a facility to upload pics from gigs and an interactive music feature.

“Throughout the development and consultation process Altitude’s communication methods were exceptional, and they showed a keen interest to fully understand our needs and the way we wanted the site to look.” - Kelly Money, Artist Manager
